QOTW: What “special occasion” cigars do you have in your humidor?
Hey guys,
I decided to start a new weekly segment called the Question of the Week. In these posts, I will pose a question to you, the reader. Feel free to respond in the comments section, where you can also reply to other comments with our “threaded comments” feature. Anyway, on to the Question of the Week.
What “special occasion” cigars do you have in your humidor?
This question came to mind because I am trying to decide which of my “special occasion” cigars I want to fire up. As some of you may know, I’m getting married next Sunday, the 22nd of November, and am in the process of deciding what to smoke during my bachelor party, rehearsal dinner, and honeymoon. I’m starting to get my travel humidor filled up with cigars I’ve been saving for an occasion like this, and here’s a list of a few of them.

- Tatuaje Frank, Drac, Boris, and Black (one of each)
- Padron 1926 80 Years Maduro
- Padron 1926 No. 9 Natural
- Partagas 8-9-8v (Cuban) from 1998
- Tatuaje Noella Reserva
These are not all of the cigars I will be bringing with me, but these are the highlights. I have been holding on to many of these for some time now, and I feel as though this is a great reason to smoke some fine cigars. It will be sad to see a few of them go, as they are the only specimen I have of the cigar (Tatuaje Frank, 8-9-8v). What I want to know is what cigars are you guys holding on to for that special occasion, whether it be a wedding, a raise, or the birth of a child? Thanks ahead of time for your comments, and, until next time, happy smoking!

ERDM Choix Supreme
Mouth watering, I think I’ll enjoy an ERDM with brunch (Sunday)
Tatuaje Cojonu 2009 is one I love on a special occasion.
I have a box of Arturo Fuentes Hemingway Untold Stories for special occasions.
Very nice. I’ve never had an Untold Story, or any of the Hemingways for that matter.
It only comes in a maduro wrapper, the rarest of the maduro Hemingways. The noraml Hemingways are cameroon wrapped. Its the only AF cigar I still smoke aside from an occasional Don Carlos. By the way, congrats on your upcoming wedding.
Nice. I have a Work of Art Maduro sitting in my humidor. I guess I should smoke that thing sometime soon.
The WOA maddie is a danged nice cigar. I like the feel of the WOA… a perfecto fattest at the foot then slimming down.
Agreed. I think I’ll fire one up sometime soon.
If you’d like to try the Untold Story drop me an addy to send it to and I’ll get one coming your way. Doing what you do, you always need to expand your horizons, not only forward with the new offerings, but with history from the old standbys.
Thanks for the offer Matt. I’ll definitely take you up on that!
i dont have alot of special occasions..what can i say i live in Ohio LOL!
normally when i find a truley amazing beer .. thats when i grab a good gar in celebration of find ales and cigar combos
Sounds good to me.
I live in Ohio and have a pretty good selection of special occasion cigars. Ranging from Camacho Liberty’s 2004 to present, AF Maduro Hemmingways, AF Anejos, Boris Drac, T110. Maybe it depends on where in Ohio you live. John, Congratulations on the upcoming nuptials.
Padron 1926 80 year Maduro

Its sounds great Congrats and enjoy and order a pizza for your wedding because you never get to eat because you are to busy going table to table taking picture by that time you and your wife did not eat. enjoy
Hi John: My special occasion cigar is a 13 year old Arturo Fuente Double Chateau Sungrown. This was the cigars I gave out when my daughter was born. I will smoke it at her wedding.
Pappy
PS you should not have any cubans in your humidor it is illegal and immoral
I’m trying to stay away from the idea of Special Occasion smokes. I mean I have them, but I think I have these smokes and I build them up in my mind so much that the special occasion that comes is never special enough. (ie it took me FOREVER to smoke one of my two franks).
To me, the list below is of cigars that I’ll use to mark a milestone. That milestone could be something as simple as making it home from work on a particularly bad, good, so-so day to being on vacation to getting married.
1 Frank
Borri
Dracs
RC184
Padron 1926
Padron 1964
Opus
Sharks
Swisher Sweet
Congrats on getting married there Johnny!
Fuente Hemi Sig from 1996, Tatuaje Maravilla (but I only have a few of them left, so the occasion has to be real special), or a Cohiba Red Dot corona. My General Cigar rep gave me a box on my sons birthday in 2003. I smoke one each year on or about that time to celebrate his birthday (usually with his granddad). I calculate that I should have 7 left when he turns 18 and then we’ll smoke one together. The Cohiba isn’t a great cigar, but it means a lot to me because of the occasion. And they are getting better as they get older. I wish I could say the same for my son!! Man he’s cranky sometimes!! LOL
I suppose I have a great number of cigars that might be considered special occasion cigars. I don’t view them as such. Every cigar I purchase is to be smoked; whenever I feel like smoking.
Actually, John, there are cigars that make something a special occasion – with a good port; a good single malt or a good wine. But…to vest a cigar with something so special that, as I have heard people say, “I am waiting for the right moment to smoke it,” changes the paradigm. They are not my cigars; I am their ‘smoker.’
I’ve recently come to the conclusion that I have way more “special occasion” cigars than everyday cigars. Some of the more special are a Habana Punch Tubed Churchill which is easily 10 years old, and a Habana RyJ Celestiales Fino from 1977. I haven’t yet figured out what special occasions these will be smoked for, might just have to start making them up!
Congrats on the impending nuptials!

I have some cigars that I am waiting to smoke when I know I’ll have the time to give it my full attention. No really for a special occasion, just 2+ hours of me time. I believe most of my special occasions have already passed.
We got a partial box of Padron 80 years. The first special occasion was our for our anniversary and we a couple more for Christmas. Silky smooth cigars just like a high quality chocolate melting in your mouth. MMMM!
