QOTW: What is your favorite vitola and why?

Hey guys,

I decided to start a new weekly segment called the Question of the Week. In these posts, I will pose a question to you, the reader. Feel free to respond in the comments section, where you can also reply to other comments with our “threaded comments” feature. Anyway, on to the Question of the Week.

What is your favorite vitola (or size and shape) and why?

My favorite size used to be a robusto, but recently I’ve been favoring coronas and lanceros. I feel as though you get more of the wrapper’s flavor when smoking these sizes because of the smaller ratio of wrapper to filler/binder. One thing that is important when smoking a corona or lancero is to smoke slowly, because these vitolas do have a tendency to overheat if you smoke them too quickly.

  1. My favorite size varies by the situation…if I’m indoors either at a herf or a B&M then I lean towards Churchills, Toros or Double Coronas because I want a cigar that will last a long time and keep me in a relaxed zone. If I’m outside in the fall/winter I lean towards Robustos or Coronas because I don’t want to freeze my butt off for a cigar LOL!!

Double Corona. Maduro wrapper. Nicaraguan in heritage. Yep.

  3. For day-to-day smokes I always have a selection of Robustos mostly Cuban but also some Nicaraguan, Partagas Serie D No.4, Cohiba or Charatan . Daytime, well it has to be Seoane the favourite being the Cohiba Exquisitos. Time on my hands then Julieta No.2 and of course the Romeo y Julieta Churchills has to be my all time favourite!

Having said all that I’m always on the lookout for something new or interesting so even though I stay with these favourites they are by no means all I have in the humidor.

Corona/Lonsdale….to achieve the true essence of the particular cigar!

Lancero would be my next favorite vitola.

I agree with The Champ. If I’m indoors in a relaxed situation I’ll go for a churchill or toro. When outdoors or while driving I usually smoke a robusto, corona, or lancero.

My Best is COHIBA: SIGLO VI “GRAN RESERVA” and 7th years Caney. You like it?
    BRGDS

I tend to favor toros. Has been a very consistent size for taste and time.

  8. While I don’t think I have a favorite vitola, I tend to gravitate towards the Robusto and Toro sizes. The only time I specifically look for a specific size is when I need a short lunch time smoke.

I prefer a torpedo. I can cut a torp so it fits perfectly comfortably as I smoke and doesn’t make me feel like my jaw is open.

It really depends on the cigar. I like corona/petite cornona Tats, Illlusione, Cruzado, and CCs. Robusto for most Pepin cigars. Torpedo Camachos. Churchill for Ashton and Davidoff. Robusto for most everything else.

  11. Willy Emerson /

I like the Toro because of the taper at the mouth. Toros don’t burn as long as Churchills which is good for me. The Java 58 is an almost perfect size for me.

  12. I also believe the type of cigar dictates the size and also my mood. ;)
I typically lean towards a Robusto when trying a new cigar and most often that’s the size I reach for most occasions. If I know I have the time, I’ll go for the a Toro. My least favorite is a Torpedo. I always argue with the cut/draw until I get it right.

  13. Duon Moore /

I tend to lean towards coronas. I do, however smoke larger cigars when playing golf or something like that.

Mine is the lancero. For 300 yrs a lancero was a cigar. It is the most elegant of cigars, and is the ultimate vehicle to display a superb wrapper. And, contrary to popular misconceptions, you get as much flavour our of a lancero as you do out of one of those 60 ring gauge tree stumps that people have taken to smoking!

  15. Danny Principe /

I generally prefer a Robusto, mostly because I dont usually have the time for a Double Corona. But if I have no place to be, I will reach for a larger stick.

  16. I rather like toros, but mostly because that is what I have the most of. Now and then, a cigarillo really hits the spot, and other times I go for the biggest stick I can find. Just depends on mood and how I want to spend smoking.

  17. Corona Gorda(5 5/8 x 46). Perfect fit in my hand and the perfect ratio of fillers to binder. You get a taste of everything.

  18. Dustin /

Easy, toro’s… it’s a nice smoke time, just right really.

  19. My favorite vitola is robusto, secong would be toro. Those sizes seem to burn the best and produce the most flavor! IMO

  20. For many cigars I go with a toro. Then, depending on the cigar, a lancero seems to be perfect.

For me I love a perfecto or other tapered cigar.
I love the way they smoke and burn. I prefer a med size RG but do enjoy the larger salamones or other tapered cigars.
My favorite cigar was a custom made Salamones I got for my wedding, It was 9″ by 60 RG
It was the best cigar I have ever smoked.

  22. JaimeVR /

For me is the Torpedo. The shape of the head helps,in my opinion, concentrate the flavors a little better, Plus the smoking time is right for me in most situations.

  23. Bradley /

I prefer a tapered cigar like a shorter torpedo or belicoso. If that size is not available I prefer a 46/48RG x 5.6-6″. Anything larger than a 52 doesn’t feel natural to me.

  24. Robusto was the cigar of choice, recently i am opting for lanceros because of their temp and consistency…

  25. Corona Gorda, Corona or Petit Corona (Marevas); lancero are second; belicoso or torpedo third. I do not feel confortable with big rings, that is why I prefer the thin ring gauge.

  26. My favorite has to be the Double Corona. It seems to let the flavor of the wrapper shine through. (It also sounds like 2 beers)

  27. Big-A-Boyd /

lancero for me, closley followed by petite corona, these cigars for me add more intense flavor, i like that in a cigar.
