J.C. Newman Cigar Company El Baton Cigar Review

This week, we have a guest review from one of the members of The Weekly Cigar’s forums. His name is Richard Burl, or @creolelad2009, and he is brand new to reviewing. I hope you enjoy his review!

New Orleans, Louisiana. The most intriguing city in all of America. A 24-hour city that puts New York, Chicago, and other supposed night-owl cities to shame. From Mardi Gras, Jazzfest, and the world-famous French Quarter to its fine cajun/creole food the city has a flavor all its own. And a whole lot of that fine cajun food is always served hot and spicy at Don Juan’s Cigar Company in nearby suburban Metairie. Every other Wednesday, there’s a cigar tasting event held at the cigar shop where only $10 gets you the featured cigar, a raffle ticket, and a coupon giving you $10 off of any quantity purchase of the featured cigar of $15 and over. Upstairs in the shop were tables full of wines and spirits too. A cigar lover’s paradise I tell you. A deal that only a fool would pass up right? Well, I’ve been to many of these events and have met the representatives of the cigar companies therein. Pete Johnson (Tatuaje), Rocky Patel, and Jose Seijas to mention a few. However, on this particular Wednesday evening a rep from J.C. Newman came by to offer one of the newest cigars on the market. El Baton is the first premium, non-bundled cigar that was distributed by J.C. Newman Cigar Company that wasn’t made by the legendary Arturo Fuente. The rep had every cigar laid out on the table including the Belicosos, Torpedoes, and Robustos. I picked out the El Baton Robusto which I eventually fell in love with. And here’s why;

Wrapper
The wrapper is a Nicaraguan Corojo grown under a gauze sunscreen. It gives the cigar an unbelievable smoke. Nicaragua has produced all kinds of legendary cigar products and this one is definetely in that upper echelon.

Flavor
The flavor contains roasted nuts with a hint of cocoa beans and sweet wood too. Not to mention that as the smoke continues you also pick up a bonus hint of spices and peppers.

Smoking Time
A robusto with a 50 ring gauge guarantees 20-30 minutes of smoking pleasure. And the El Baton certainly held true as I enjoyed all of my 25 minutes discovering all of the aforementioned items. If you like big cigar rings, I highly recommend it.

Rating
This fabulous cigar got a 91 rating by Cigar Aficionado for a good reason. It’s a great full-bodied smoke that can be enjoyed and may ash out only once. It was also named Cigar Of The Week by the acclaimed magazine as well. And for $5.75 it is well worth the money spent.

Well, there you have it guys. A premium cigar that I personally enjoyed along with all the cajun food and booze you could shake a stick at. And all for just a measly $10 which in a God-forsaken economy where people are losing jobs, homes, and families faster than an old-man’s receding hairline is something we all should smoke to.

    Holy cow! You smoked this thing in 25 minutes? Mine took me an hour and a half.

  2. Hi Richard…No mistake in smoking a Robuesto 20 to 30 minutes??? If it”s correct, perhaps you smoke too ansious or very quickly. I”m sorry, but it”s my aprecciation. Berst regards from Buenos Aires.

  3. The El Baton is a great cigar. The cigar shop you attended the event in sounds even better!

    I also smoke cigars slowly. A robusto size will generally take me 60 minutes to an hour and 15 minutes.

    Take your time and enjoy the cigar. Hot boxing the thing changes the flavor and makes it harsh.
